Workaround for iPad Spotlight Search: typing text into shortcuts prompt with a hardware keyboard

If you run a shortcut on iPad from Spotlight search and need to input text into a prompt, the text you type doesn't go into the shortcut itself; it still types in the search field. There's a workaround for this that's not well publicized, so I thought I would share it here.

The issue is related to using a hardware keyboard, as it works fine with the software keyboard. The workaround is to press command-space again after the shortcuts text prompt appears to close spotlight in the background. After that, you should be able to type in the prompt.
